This is an English language proficiency test developed by Boston Educational Services for middle and high school students, particularly tailored for non-native English speakers in academic settings. It evaluates a candidate in the following five key aspects:
Grammar (10 minutes, two parts):
- 13 fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice questions
- 12 multiple-choice questions
Listening (20 minutes, three parts):
- 4 low-intermediate level short conversations between two to three sentences, each followed by one multiple-choice question
- 1 intermediate level conversation of two to three minutes, followed by four multiple-choice questions
- 1 higher level lecture of about four minutes, followed by six multiple-choice questions
Reading (20 minutes, three parts):
- 2 low-intermediate level passages of about 50 words each, followed by a multiple-choice question each
- 1 intermediate level passage of about 200 words, followed by four multiple-choice questions
- 1 higher level passage of about 500 words, followed by six multiple-choice questions
Writing (25 minutes, two parts):
- 5 minutes to write a short response of about 75-100 words (email, note, etc.)
- 20 minutes to write a 250-word essay to express an opinion
Speaking (5 minutes, two parts):
- After hearing the recording of a question, prepare for 15 seconds and then respond to it in 45 seconds
- After hearing the recording of a question, prepare for 30 seconds and then respond to it in 60 seconds
