This is an intermediate-level test to demonstrate that a learner’s mastery of English language skills is adequate for daily and instructional use. The test consists of four sections:

 

Reading (45 minutes):
Six parts of different types of texts (signs, newspapers, magazines, etc.) with multiple-choice, matching, gap-filling and cloze questions.

 

Writing (45 minutes):
Two parts, involving email writing (about 100 words) and article or story writing (about 100 words).

 

Listening (30 minutes):
Four parts of multiple-choice, matching, gap-filling and cloze questions based on recorded monologues, dialogues, and interviews.

 

Speaking (about 15 minutes):
Four parts, including an interview on factual/personal information, a pictorial description, a discussion/negotiation of alternatives, and a discussion of personal opinions/experiences.

 

Passing the PET indicates proficiency at Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

 

This test is a pre-requisite for the AEIS or S-AEIS test on the Primary 5 level (a score of 140 and above).
